A wooden shoe for practicing lacing and tying away from a real one. Two things make it easier: it lies flat on a table at eye level instead of at an awkward angle on a foot, and the surface is ridged, so the laces stay where they're put rather than sliding while the child works.
That leaves the child free to concentrate on the sequence — over, under, through, pull — rather than on holding everything still at the same time.
Highlights & Tips
- Practise on the table, not on the foot. A real shoe is at the wrong angle, upside down from the child's view, and usually attached to a morning that is already running late. Flat on a table at eye level, the same task is far easier to learn.
- Lacing comes months before tying. Threading the lace through the holes in order is its own skill, and worth mastering on its own before a bow is attempted.
- Let them do the last step. Pull the bow most of the way and let the child finish it. Then hand over one more step each time. Finishing is what they remember.
