How to use
- If your child finds unfamiliar textures difficult, start with a small number in a shallow tray rather than a full bin. Being able to see the bottom makes the first go far less daunting.
- For a child who seeks touch, fill a deeper bin and let them scoop, pour and bury their hands. Cups, spoons and funnels stretch the activity out.
OT Tip
- Hide small figures or fidgets in the beads and have the child find them by feel alone. It turns a sensory activity into a searching task and builds tolerance without the child noticing they are working.
- The same idea works for learning. Hide letters, numbers or sight words and have the child pull them out and name them. It turns practice into a game.

- Keep away from children who still mouth objects, and from pets.
- Never put them in or near the ears or nose.
- Count them out and count them back in.
- Wet beads on a hard floor are a slip hazard.

How do I store putty, water beads and instant snow?
Return putty to its sealed container after every use and keep it away from carpet, upholstery, hair and clothing. Discard it if it becomes sticky, crumbly or discoloured. Expanded water beads and instant snow keep for several days sealed and can be rehydrated if they shrink — discard them if they turn cloudy, slimy or start to smell. Never pour either down a drain; they expand and block pipes.
