A full uppercase alphabet in textured sandpaper. The finger learns the letter before the pencil does, because tracing gives the hand the movement and the feedback without the difficulty of holding a pencil.
Two fingers, always the same two, starting where the letter starts. Say the sound rather than the name.
Three letters at a time on a mat, not the whole alphabet on a table.
Highlights & Tips
- The finger learns before the pencil does. Tracing a rough letter gives the hand the movement and the feedback without any of the difficulty of holding a pencil.
- Two fingers, always the same two. Index and middle together, starting where the letter starts. Consistency is what builds the motor memory.
- Say the sound, not the name. Trace and say mmm rather than em. The sound is what reading is built on.
- Three letters at a time. The whole alphabet on a table is a display. Three on a mat is a lesson.
- Close their eyes. Guessing a letter by touch alone is harder than it sounds and children love it.
