A full lowercase alphabet in textured sandpaper. Almost every letter on a page is lowercase, so this is the set that carries the weight once recognition starts.
Trace with two fingers and say the sound rather than the name.
Put b and d side by side on purpose, because feeling the difference in the movement does more for a child who confuses them than looking ever will.
Highlights & Tips
- Lowercase is what reading is made of. Almost every letter on a page is lowercase, so this is the set that carries the most weight once recognition starts.
- Two fingers, always the same two. Index and middle together, starting where the letter starts. Consistency builds the motor memory.
- Say the sound, not the name. Trace and say sss rather than ess.
- b and d together, on purpose. Feeling the difference in the movement does more for a child who confuses them than any amount of looking.
- Three letters at a time. The whole alphabet on a table is a display. Three on a mat is a lesson.
