Add water and the powder turns into fluffy snow that children can scoop, squeeze and shape. Let them pour the water in themselves — watching it happen in their own hands is most of the appeal.
A handful of winter, indoors. Most children here only ever see snow in pictures, and making it on the kitchen table is an hour they remember. Dries out and works again next time.
Highlights & Tips
- Let them pour the water in. Watching powder turn into snow in their own hands is most of the appeal, and pouring from a small jug is fine motor work in itself.
- Cold snow is a different experience from room-temperature snow. Make it with chilled water, or put a batch in the fridge for ten minutes. For a child who seeks strong sensory input, the temperature is half the point.
- It dries out and comes back. Spread it out to dry and add water again next time, until it stops behaving the way it should.
- Good for a child who will not touch messy things. It is cool and dry rather than wet and sticky, which makes it one of the easiest first steps into messy play.
