Why It Works

• Weight at the hand gives the brain more information about where the hand is and what it is doing.
• For a child whose writing is shaky rather than weak, that extra feedback often steadies things faster than more practice does.

How to use

• Use for one task — a worksheet, a paragraph — rather than a whole lesson.
• Try both hands, not only the writing one. The other hand holds the paper steady and is often the one that needs help.

OT Tip

• Worth trying before a pencil grip. If the difficulty is control rather than how the pencil is held, weights work on the actual cause.

Strap onto the back of the hand. Should be snug but never tight.

• Children and adults with unsteady or shaky hand movement

Weighted wearables.

• Adult supervision at all times.
• Never fasten tightly. The strap must not restrict circulation.
• Short, scheduled use rather than continuous wear.
• The user must be able to remove them independently.
• Watch for signs of discomfort and take them off straight away if you see any — a change in hand colour, rubbing or pulling at the strap, or the child stopping what they were doing.
