A 10 x 15 cm slate for the Wet, Dry, Try method. You write the letter in chalk, the child traces it with a wet sponge finger, dries it with a scrap of paper towel, then writes it themselves.

Three times to practice the same letter, three different ways. That amount of fun and repetition increases retention and learning.

Highlights & Tips
  • Wet, Dry, Try is the method, and it matters more than the board. You write the letter in chalk. The child traces it with a wet sponge finger, dries it with a small piece of paper towel, then writes it in chalk themselves. Three passes, three kinds of feedback, one letter.
  • The small size is deliberate. A 10 by 15 cm board keeps letters inside the range a child's hand can control without moving the whole arm.
  • The corner is the reference point. Every capital letter in the programme starts in the same top left corner, so a child who does not yet know where a letter begins always has somewhere to put the chalk.
  • Chalk gives resistance that a pencil does not. That drag through the fingers is useful feedback for a child still learning how hard to press.
