A first pair of scissors, 17 cm and sized for small hands, with safety edges and a grip a child can actually hold.
Start with snipping rather than cutting out: one snip along the edge of a strip of card, over and over. It teaches the open-and-shut motion without asking a child to steer at the same time — and card holds still where thin paper folds away from the blades.
Highlights & Tips
- Start with snipping, not cutting out. One snip along the edge of a strip of card, over and over. It teaches the open-and-shut motion without asking the child to steer at the same time.
- Use card, not paper. Thin paper folds and bends away from the blades and makes a hard job harder. Stiff card holds still.
- Thumbs up on both hands. Draw a face on the thumbnail and tell them it has to look at the ceiling — it lands better than any explanation.

- Teach the rule from day one: you sit down to cut, and you walk with them closed and pointing at the floor.
